Henri Nestlé gave his name to what is now the world’s largest food and beverage business, with over 291,000 employees, 413 factories and operating in 187 countries with sales of more than CHF 92.57 billion in 2019.
Over 60 years after it first started operations in the country, Nestlé’s Products (MU) Ltd (NPML) today is a robust and stable organization, proud of its role in bringing the best food and beverage throughout the stages of the Mauritian consumers’ lives.
The beginnings - 1867 - 1905
In 1867, at a time of high infant mortality, Henri Nestlé developed a milk-based food for babies unable to feed from their mothers. Within five years, Nestlé Milk was being sold around the world as a food for babies, old people and the infirm. Rapid development followed and Nestlé soon diversified into other areas with the introduction of a condensed milk product, followed by a move into the growing chocolate industry.
Although Henri bowed out of the Company in 1875, the name was retained and in 1905 it merged with the Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company to form a dynamic new venture known simply as Nestlé. We have since then continued to develop through product innovation and acquisitions.
1958 : Formation of Nestle’s Products (MU) Ltd
Our history begins in Mauritius in 1958. Nestlé operated under the Ireland Fraser group. As it showed tremendous potential, in 1964 we set up a business in Mauritius. The company gained autonomy and is named Nestlé’s Products (Mauritius) Ltd. Over the years a nationwide sales and distribution network was established. In 2003, H.A.Ramtoola & Sons Ltd was appointed as the sole distributor for NPML and in 2012, NPML shifted from its Riche Terre office space to move to Ebène.
Nestlé Mauritius’ office became head office for the Indian Ocean Region, which includes Nestlé operations in Madagascar, Seychelles and Comoro islands.
Today, our employees and distributors throughout the Indian Ocean Region are just as committed to enhancing quality of life for everyone, today and for generations to come; a tradition that Henri Nestlé began more than 150 years ago.
